Philip completed his first recruitment deal in 1996, since when he has been involved in a wide range of acquisitions and disposals. He founded and floated Staffing Ventures in 2001, stepping down from the Board in 2006 by when the market capitalisation had grown to £56m. Deals have involved recruitment businesses in the UK, USA, Japan and the EU and have spanned sectors ranging from industrial, driving and engineering to healthcare, education, IT and finance. Optima advise acquisitive companies on strategies and identifying targets as well as assisting owners to sell and realise the value of their efforts. In 2019 Optima won Best Corporate Finance and M&A Provider in the Supplier Awards to the recruitment industry.

With an ethos of ‘prevention rather than cure’ and using a progressive, proactive and commercial approach to business Lawspeed has built a significant corporate client base since its inception in 1997.On IR35 Adrian was responsible for the Lawspeed devised first ‘IR35 friendly’ contract in 1999, the first IR35 expenses insurance in 2001, and key terms from a Lawspeed drafted contract were quoted as key in the first IR35 contractor case won against HMRC in 2002. Adrian was also responsible for devising the limited company opt out from the Agency conduct regulations as part of Lawspeed’s work with government in 2003.
