It appears, in the latest ONS statistics on the UK labour market, that the uncertainty of Brexit has tightened the jobs market. The latest results published in December show:
- UK employment increases to 32.48million, 79,000 more than for May to July 2018
- The unemployment rate was estimated at 4.1%, virtually unchanged from the previous period
- Number of vacancies sits at 848,000 for September to November 2018 – 10,000 more than the estimate for the previous period
- The number of people aged from 16 to 64 years not working and not seeking or available to work (economically inactive) was 8.66million, 95,000 fewer than the previous period
Indeed, these latest statistics indicate the strength of the UK job market, but with near-record numbers of vacancies and candidate availability tightening, the challenge of finding skilled candidates is set to intensify.
