How to Register for MTD with HMRC

Those affected by Making Tax Digital (MTD) should have by now received a letter from HMRC regarding their new requirements. From 1 April 2019, those VAT registered and with a turnover greater than the VAT threshold must keep digital VAT records and use software to submit VAT Returns. In order to do this, you must have registered with HMRC, we have produced two guides on how to register for MTD with HMRC – click on the buttons below to access.

For Raffingers’ clients, where we file your VAT return, we have already set up the MTD account with HMRC. Therefore, you do not need to take further action. However for those that file their own VAT return, either through Xero or Sage, or the the gateway, you will need to register for MTD.

If you are in the process of filing a VAT return. This will be the last under the old system. We recommend you register for MTD once this has been submitted. The next set of VAT returns to be filed under Making Tax Digital are as follows:

  • ¼ ended 30 June 20119 – filed by 7 August 2019
  • ¼ ended 31 July 2019 – filed by 7 September 2019
  • ¼ ended 31 August 2019 – filed by 7 October 2019
